Ole Pepperpot Pepper
Ole Pepperpot Pepper
Capsicum annuum
Pepperpot is a hot pepper with 4-5in fruits that ripen to red. The plants grow 2-3ft tall and fruit heavily and consistently until frost. The fruits are typically quite hot but occasionally you may encounter one without any heat at all.
Pepperpot pepper is named for its use in Pepper Pot stew, a dish with origins in West Africa and the Caribbean, which became renowned in Philadelphia, due to Black women vendors who served the stew as street food in the 1800’s. The Pepperpot pepper variety was stewarded by Black Philadelphia catering families who used it in their own dishes.
