This historic, family heirloom variety was introduced by William Woys Weaver, who received the seeds from Mrs. M.J. Grooms, an African American woman in Philadelphia. The seeds were passed down to Mrs. Grooms from her great grandfather, who worked as a cook at Eastern State Penitentiary and received the tomatoes from the incarcerated workers at prison garden.
Moyamensing tomato has bright red fruits about 3" wide that are good for both fresh eating and canning.
