Large White Watermelon

Citrullus lanatus

Also known as Odell’s Large White Watermelon. This variety produces large fruits with pale green skin and light pink flesh. The flavor is refreshingly sweet, not overly sugary, and very juicy. The seeds are white and remain tender, even at maturity, making them easy to eat. The rind is also surprisingly tender and edible down to the skin and great for pickling.

This variety is one of few that is known to be developed by an African-American man, Harry, who was enslaved on a plantation in South Carolina in the 1840’s.
