Cucumis anguria
Burr Gherkins are a cucumber relative native to Africa. The fruits are small and fat, not more than 3" long and 2" wide, and look and taste very similar to cucumber. Unlike cucumbers, they are exceptionally disease-resistant and pest-resistant. The young fruits have more tender skin a fresher flavor, but they can be eaten at any stage, raw, cooked or pickled. This variety was collected from Ethiopia by the USDA in 1967. Compared to other varieties of this species, such as the West Indian Burr Gherkin, the fruit has much smaller spines that are easy to rub off with the fingers.
