Aunt Lou's Underground Railroad Tomato
Aunt Lou's Underground Railroad Tomato
Solanum lycopersicum
The Aunt Lou's Underground Railroad tomato is a juicy, pink-red beefsteak tomato. Its large, meaty, tangy fruits are perfect for sandwiches. The plants are indeterminate and require sturdy trellising to support the heavy fruits.
Its history traces back to the mid-19th century with an unnamed Black man, possibly escaping slavery, who brought the seeds from Kentucky to Ripley, Ohio. In Ripley, he shared the seeds with Aunt Lou, a white woman. The seeds were later passed down to Francis Parker, who shared them with Mr. Ellis in Sardinia, Ohio. The tomato gained recognition through various enthusiasts, eventually being listed in the Seed Savers Exchange Yearbook in 2010 and earning a place in the Slow Food Ark of Taste in 2018.
